In a previous life I was a mage, and I posted this on another forum, thought it might be useful here. In all if you can get 100 plus FR as a non tank then you should be ok for most of MC.

I thought I would put together a little guide as to what FR gear is out there pre MC/Onyxia/BWL for cloth wearers.
Of the Eagle, of Fire Resistance
Throughout our time in the world that is warcraft we have stumbled on pants of the eagle, robes of the whale. Always keep an eye out for any items that drop of Fire Resistance or any that are in the AH.
Flarecore Stuff
The first thing to point out is that Flarecore Gear would be a life saver for us if we could get the mats, but it needs mats that drop in MC, so for now this is a no-no. When we get into MC and the mats start dropping and the tanks needs have been serviced then we may get a chance to make some Flarecore gear, best to forget it really.
Shoulders, Belts and Gloves.
I cannot find any Fire Resist gear for these slots, but help is at hand, especically if you are a lock. By having three bits of Dreadmist you get +4 Fire Resistance.
There is also the Argent Dawn enchant that you can chuck +5 Fire Resistance onto your Shoulders. With the amount of grinding and the like in Scholo and Stratholme you should find it relativly easy to get your rep up to Revered to get this enchant.
All in all this gives you +9 FR on 3 slots that have no specific slot with FR gear on it.
Wizardweave vs. Drops
There are three bits of cloth that can be crafted. These are the Wizardweave bits
Robes: 77 Armor +17 Arcane Resistance +18 Fire Resistance
Legs: 62 Armor +16 Arcane Resistance +16 Fire Resistance
Turban: 64 Armor +18 Arcane Resistance +18 Fire Resistance
Nice and easy to get and 52 FR straight away. No grinding.
However there are some alternatives
Robes: Polychromatic Visionwrap, 87 Armour +20 to all Resistances
Pants: Skullsmoke Leggings 76 Armor +20 Sta +20 Int +10 FR +5 SR
Head: Starfire Tiara 69 Armor +28 Int +10 Spi +10 FR
However there are issues getting these, the Poly Chrom drops from Solakar, the Father Flame fella in UBRS. So you need to get a group to summon him.
Skullsmoke is from Vectus in the viewing room of Scholomance and the Starfire is from Jed Runewatcher. Skullsmoke has a 5% drop chance and the Jed himself is a rare spawn, which drops starfire around 25% of the time. If you do go after Vectus make sure that you do the egg collecting questline in UBRS first since you get the Dawns Gambit, a way of getting rid of all the students in the room with Vectus in Scholomance.
So top tip is get some Wizardweave gear as standard and then farm for the others if you want.
Boots and Bracers
There is only two sets of boots for this job and it is the Dragonriders that drop from Rend Blackheart in UBRS and the Firestriders for Blanazaar in Scarlett Strat.
Dragonrider Boots 61 Armor, +5 Stamina, +16 Intellect, +10 Fire Resistance, Damage&Healing + 18
Fire Striders 61 Armor, 5 Spirit, +15 Fire Resistance
Bracers are mainly found in Black Rock Depths
Lord Incendius has a load of Flameweave Cuffs he wants to give out (Flameweave of the various animals or Wrath etc) or he may hand out some Incendic Bracers. Get to him and the odds are you are gonna get some FR bracers
Incendic Bracers 32 Armor, +14 Fire Resistance
Flameweave Cuffs 35 Armor, +10 FR and then +10ish on other stats depending on the type that drops.
So there is plenty of scope to get full FR gear and no stats or to get some FR and not loose a load of stats.
Weapons
There is the mecca of Fire Resist Weapons, that is the Elemental Mage Staff, a world drop. Statswise are more geared towards mages but what can you do??
Elemental Mage Staff
+20 Fire Resistance, +20 Frost Resistance,
Equip: Increases damage done by Fire spells and effects by up to 36.
Equip: Increases damage done by Frost spells and effects by up to 36.
However this is not going to drop much so a nice offhand item and a main hand may work. For a mage I cant see an FR main hand weapon but there are some offhanders out there that are not world greens.
These two jump out at me as particularly farmable
Skull of Burning Shadows
+15 Fire Resistance, +10 Shadow Resistance
a 15% drop chance for Malikid the Pallid in UD Strat
or
Magmus Stone
+7 Stamina, +4 Spirit, +15 Fire Resistance
a 10% - 15% drop frm Magmus in Black Rock Depths
Add on your main hand of choice, Gift of the Elven Magi, Inventors Focul Sword, Lorespinner and you are laughing!! I personally have the Lorespinner as it is a 100% guarenteed quest reward item
Cloak
This all depends on whether you want to farm for a stats based cloak or quest for a FR one
Cape of the Fire Salamander
41 Armor, +5 Stamina, +16 Spirit, +7 Fire Resistance
a 35% drop from Ambassedor Flamelash in BRD
or
Smokey's Drape
38 Armor, +9 Stamina, +10 Fire Resistance
a quest reward from a non dungeon Eastern Plagueland quest line (which is easily soloable)
Trinkets
The infamoys Royal Seal of Eldre'Thalas (+10 FR), a class trinket found from getting your Class book in Dire Maul.
Smoking Heart of the Mountain (+7 All resist) for the enchanters out there, a crafted BoP trinket you can make
Ward of the Elements which is a trinket from the jail break quest line is nice as well
+8 Arcane Resistance +8 Fire Resistance +8 Nature Resistance +8 Frost Resistance +8 Shadow Resistance
Enchants
For a Lesser Mystic Essence and an Elemental Fire you can have +7 FR on a cloak
For Revered and 9 honour token hand ins with the Argent Dawn you can get +5 FR on shoulders
And the daddy of FR enchants, the Libram of Resiliance.
This is a randow world drop in level 50plus zones, and will sell for 100gold on the AH. However it is unique, so if you do get one use it, or start the quest cos if another drops you wont be able to loot it.
The UBRS key is a nice FR based item for a ring as is the Drakefire Amulet from the Onyxia key in a necklace format
Seal of Ascension (RING) +10 Fire Resistance +10 Nature Resistance +10 Frost Resistance
Drakefire Amulet +10 Stamina +15 Fire Resistance
