General Roleplaying Guide
By Valstorm
What is Roleplay?
Roleplay is the art of adopting a new personality; behaving, speaking and thinking as your in-game character would do. Just as the word ‘roleplay’ implies, you are essentially ‘playing a role’.
How do I Roleplay?
Just about anybody can roleplay, its easy! Think about what type of character you want to be before you start. Who is your character? What race are they? Where are they from? How old are they? These are the sort of questions you should be asking yourself before you decide to play your role. Some roleplayers even take the time to write a short background or even a story about their character’s personality and history to truly understand exactly what role they want to act.
Rules of Roleplay
There is only one general rule that should be remembered when you are playing on a roleplay server; you should always remain in-character unless you are speaking in a specified OOC (out-of-character) channel. Breaking character is seen as bad practice, especially in local chat channels, and will most often be frowned upon by other roleplayers. There is no right or wrong way to roleplay, but there are good and bad ways of playing your role. Every server or guild has its own governing rules and methods of how to roleplay, but here are a few pointers on the do’s and don’ts of how to be a good roleplayer.
*
Do!
• Respect how other people choose to play their character.
• Name your character sensibly. For example: not “Uberd00d”.
• Speak phonetically. Use your character’s accent.
• Use emotes to convey your feelings and actions.
• Get to know other characters and their history.
• Send a private reminder to players who are OOC (out-of-character).
• Help somebody if they are new to roleplaying.
• Take time to think about who you want to be.
• Remember it’s only a game!
*
Don’t
• Lecture others if you think they are playing their role wrong.
• Break character in local chat channels.
• Use ‘txt speak’ such as; “How ru m8?”
• Assume that you know another player’s character role. Let them tell you first.
• Be forced to play a certain way if you don’t want to.
• Take offence or get upset if somebody dislikes your character for their role, race or background, remember they are roleplaying too and their character might have certain prejudices against your type of character.
Roleplay Servers
Blizzard have set up designated RP (Roleplay) servers for World of Warcraft, these servers have additional rules and policies .
You can read the additional RP realm policies here.
